HPA 2020-2021 School Calendar

June 18, 2020

Dear High Point Family,

Over the last several weeks, we have been working toward a definition of what school will look like at High Point when students return on August 17, 2020. In May, a survey was sent to all families via MailChimp requesting feedback and any parent concerns about the upcoming 2020-21 school year. On May 26th, the board voted that our school calendar would remain very similar to the one that was adopted in March of this year. In the adopted calendar there is a two-week extension that will only be used in the event of a COVID-19 closure.

With that in mind, here is what we know:

  1. As shown on the calendar, school will start August 17, 2020

  2. It is expected that the Commissioner of Education, Mike Morath, will communicate guidelines for the upcoming school year next Tuesday afternoon (June 23rd).

  3. The Leadership team and academic staff have been working on three models:

  4. Return to school with social distancing protocols in place

  5. Return to school with a hybrid model which would include distance learning components. If this is implemented, TEA expectations for rigorous online instruction will be followed. NOTE: If implemented, the learning model WILL BE MORE RIGOROUS than our more recent spring learning model.

  6. If there is a COVID-19 closure, the expectation will be that rigorous distance learning will be implemented across all grade levels.

  7. Since June 1st, HPA has secured enough devices for every student grades K-12:

  8. K – 2nd: Fire Tablets

  9. 3rd – 6th: Classroom sets of Chromebooks (1 per student)

  10. 7th – 12th: 1:1 Chromebooks (model currently in place)

  11. The use of this technology will be implemented in the fall.

Over the next few weeks, you will receive information on cleaning procedures, learning models, and social distancing protocols for the upcoming school year. Please keep an eye out for communication via MailChimp email.

I am sure we all agree that these are uncertain times. As a parent myself, I recognize that the information shared above still leaves room for questions. In the spirit of transparency and accuracy, I am asking you to trust our leadership and our school to navigate this new frontier with the best interests of the students, staff and families at heart.

In closing, I would like to reiterate that the safety of your children is our top priority. Thank you again for sharing your children with us.

Take care, be safe and stay well,
